Bull in a Tea Shop Bodyguard Shifters Book 5 edition by Zoe Chant Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

  • Maddox Murphy, a Bull shifter who used to work for Darius Keegan (DAY CARE DRAGON). He reached the small town of Silvermine, Arizona. Even though he had no clues about what he was looking for, he knew it wasn't the life he left behind. As he made his way to the café, he came across the sheriff and some thugs who were assaulting two teenagers. He stepped in and save the day.

Only to fund himself in danger afterwards. Thanks goodness, the children (Luke and Bailey) helped him after he was injured. They took him to her aunt Verity's place. Not only was he hurt but there was a wall between him and his inner animal.

Verity Breslin was the owner of a tea shop named Whistletop. For years she had been raising her teenage niece, Bailey. Despite her blindness, she wasn't about to let a corrupt sheriff and his idiot puppet master Ducker strong-arm her out of her business. She found Maddox in her shed and took care of him when she learned why he did for Bailey and Luke.

She felt as if she'd known the newcomer all her life. It turned out that she was indeed his mate. He decided to ran for sheriff against the current sheriff. Bailey was happy that her aunt and Maddox were finally together. As they prepared for his campaign, the danger surrounding them grew.

Maddox wasn't about to let sheriff Kawkins and Ducker harm the people he'd come to know and love. With the help of his bull and some old friends, together they took care of the evildoers.

When all was said and done, Maddox finally found what he was looking for.

A BULL IN A TEA SHOP is the fifth book in Zoe Chant's BODYGUARD SHIFTERS series. It was fast-paced, beautiful and captivating. Excellent job by Zoe Chant. 5 Stars!

****I received a free copy from the author, without any obligation to review.***
  • I remember a bit about Maddox from the previous story in this series. It's a year later, and Maddox is dropped off in a small town in Arizona. Once there he ends up saving 2 teens from being beat up by the sheriff and his goons. The kids help him after the sheriff retaliated. They take him to the girl's Aunt Verity. This is where it gets interesting, because Verity has been blind since birth. I loved having her as the heroine. She is exactly what I wanted to see and yet so different from what I expected. Maddox is the bad boy trying to turn good. He has some different shifter issues to deal with, too. The lively pace moves the story along, with an upbeat tone, a character oriented storyline with some action and steamy scenes, as well as vibrant characters who make you root for them! There are sweet scenes nd some fun scenes. The teens are cute! If this sounds good to you, get it and sit back and enjoy! Then go back and read all the rest in this series if you haven't already!
  • I was hoping that Maddox would get his story and this book does not disappoint. While in previous books Maddox was not always a good guy due to being a bodyguard, in this book Maddox realizes that he wants to change. Verity is fighting her own battles against a crooked sheriff and a ruthless land Barron. When these two meet, they complement each other and shows that everyone deserves a HEA.
  • This has been a truly sweet series but this was by far the sweetest. Don't remember a bull shifter before but Maddox is typical bull. I can see the pairing. Maddox so huge and fearsome but with a vulnerable side of not being wanted and feeling less after his injury. Verity appearing weak because she is blind yet having a back bone of steel.
  • Oh my goodness! I am so glad that we got to see Maddox find his HEA. He might be a big, burly bull shifter, but he found just what he needed in this gentle blind woman and her niece. The author did a fabulous job of showing us the true essence of Maddox and who he really wants to be. I can’t wait to read the next book from this author.
  • I really enjoy reading Zoe Chant's books! I especially liked this one as the characters were so real and not just the same old thing. Verity was so self-sufficient and never let her blindness keep her from doing what she wanted and what she felt was right. And Maddox had a wonderful second chance at family and happiness.
  • I love this series!!!! I couldn't wait for Maddox's story and it didn't disappoint! I love that there is more to come! The way your characters grow and evolve into the characters we love is impressive. It's great how they show up in each other's stories to lend support! Great books!
  • Thoroughly enjoyed reading this couple's story very much. The story kept me on pins and needles just waiting for their happy ever after. Thank you for writing this story. Eagerly waiting for the next book in this series.

Notes from a Young Black Chef A Memoir eBook Kwame Onwuachi Joshua David Stein Reviews

  • Really enjoyed reading about my favorite Top Chef contestant. Kwame epitomizes what it takes to succeed as a black man in this world. He takes us on a journey from a toddler cooking with his Mom, to his time with an abusive father, living with his grandfather in Nigeria, being a head strong teenager in the Bronx, to a drug dealer in college, to resisting racism in fine dining kitchens in NY, to finding himself as an innovative chef cooking the food of his ancestors. Resistance, resilience and survival!
  • What an interesting story! He clearly has an ego, and he’s clearly worried about it. Maybe he shouldn’t worry too much - this is an almost brutally honest autobiography, that some how leaves me wanting very much to try his cooking.
  • Inspiring.
  • Well written and an awe-inspiring story. Look forward to cooking through Chef’s recipes that are included in each chapter.
  • Most readers likely know Kwame Onwuachi from Top Chef (season 13) and may be interested in the book because of that show. However, his chapter on the Top Chef experience is perhaps the least-interesting part of this fascinating memoir. Onwuachi focuses largely on his culture and the role it plays in his professional life, explaining that he is typically asked to cook either southern comfort food (he's from the Bronx) or African cuisine (his heritage is Nigerian, though he was asked to cook a meal from Senegal because "You know, it's Africa"), but his passion is fine-dining. He shares experiences working in a variety of cooking environments--catering, the galley of a Deepwater Horizon cleanup ship, Mexican restaurants, Per Se and Eleven Madison Park, culminating in his own restaurant, the Shaw Bijou in DC--and provides a personal look at what he experienced in each of those environments.

But Onwuachi's focus throughout is on his race, his experiences growing up, and how those continue to influence his life. His parents divorced when he was young, his father was (is) physically and emotionally abusive, he was a troublemaker in school (resulting in his being sent to live with his grandfather in Nigeria for two years), and he became a drug-dealer who was expelled from college. Onwuachi tells his story matter-of-factly, without excuses or pulls for sympathy, allowing the reader a glimpse of the challenges he faced. When Onwuachi has his wake-up moment--watching Obama's inauguration after a night-long bender--he then shows how his experiences to that time helped him successfully matriculate from the CIA while owning his own catering business (largely funded by selling candy bars instead of drugs), work his way up the chef ladder while confronting implicit racism, and eventually open his own restaurant. He shows why this restaurant failed after only three months (to the delight of much of the DC restaurant community), and the story is unfair and heart-breaking to the reader despite Onwuachi not asking for our pity.

While Onwuachi's story is fascinating, the writing itself is workmanlike clear, direct, easy to follow, but without a strong voice or sense of style. Despite his youth (the entire story happens before he turns 30), there's so much here I wanted to learn more about trying to attend a private school when your home life is chaotic and falling apart, living in Nigeria when all you've known is the Bronx, successfully passing challenging courses at the CIA while simultaneously running a business and working on the side, and so on. The apparently-required recipes after each chapter reflect this dynamic of sharing some but not enough they're basic examples of dishes related to the chapters that preceded them, with little evidence of what Onwuachi would do to elevate them.

In summary, Onwuachi shares a glimpse of his rich and dramatic experiences and demonstrates that we can learn from--and overcome--the most challenging circumstances in our lives. Highly recommended (even if you're not a fan of chef memoirs).
  • Overall this was a good read, and worth your time if you love food and its preparation. I think the overall reason I gave this three stars, though, is because it feels like the full story hasn't been written. Most people wait until their later seasons in life when they can look back at the journey and have it all make sense, whereas this book left me feeling unfinished.

I'd recommend this to readers who've felt pushed down or ignored all their lives despite their talent and abilities. It takes a drive like Kwame's to get past people's obstacles of seeing who you really are, of seeing how you can be a strong asset to a team and a family and a great leader. In the end, you just have to swallow your disappointment and try again. And again. And again. And that attitude has not let him down.

Big shout-out to Kwame's mother too -- what an amazing woman!
  • This fine book traces the complex history of Kwame Onwuachi on his journey through a number of restaurants with a focus on his experiences because of his race. Fascinating reading, but I love trying the recipes -- and this one was a triumph for this mid-level cook with some training at the Culinary Institute of America -- three one week courses to be precise.

Bastilla by Executive Chef/Owner Kwame Onwuachi of The Shaw Bijou in Washington, DC.
    Serves 4 people

    INGREDIENTS
3 pounds Australian Lamb Shoulder, deboned
    Salt to taste
1 cup + 4 tablespoons Ras el hanout
4 + extra for frying tablespoons canola oil
    3 Yellow onions, diced
    1 head Garlic, minced
    2 cups Leeks, sliced
    1 tablespoon Tomato Paste
    1 ½ gallons Chicken Stock
    3 tablespoons Coconut Sugar
    4 inches Feuilles de brik, 2 x 5 inches
    1 cup Egg wash
    2 tablespoons Button Mushrooms, dehydrated
    2 tablespoons powdered Sugar

    DIRECTIONS
    1. Season lamb aggressively with salt and one cup Ras el Hanout.

    2. In a large pot on high heat, add canola oil. Add lamb and sear on all sides until dark brown, about two minutes per side. Remove lamb and set aside. Next, add onions, garlic, leeks and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add 4 tablespoons of Ras el Hanout and tomato paste. Mix until combined and cook until the tomato paste has a dark rusty color, about 5 minutes. Place lamb back in pan. Cover with chicken stock and turn heat low. Simmer for 3 hours, covered.

    3. Remove lamb and shred it. Reserve two cups of shredded lamb. Place the rest in the fridge.

    4. Strain the braising liquid into a bowl and place back in the pot. Add coconut sugar and reduce on medium-high heat until the liquid is syrupy, about 5 minutes. Set aside.

    5. Place the shredded lamb in a half hotel pan and place another half hotel pan on top. Weigh it down and place in the refrigerator for one day.

    6. Heat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove the lamb from the pan by flipping it over. Portion into one and a half inch by 4 inch pieces. Season with salt. Place in a large, oven-safe sauté pan on high heat. Sear until crispy on one side, about 5 minutes. Place in oven and warm through, about 10 minutes.

    7. Wrap the feuilles de brick around a metal tube and seal the edges with egg wash. Fill a large pot one quarter full with oil. Place on high heat until oil reaches temperature of 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Add wrapped fueilles de brick and fry until crispy, about 5 minutes. In a large pot over high heat. Let cool and remove metal tube. Stuff with shredded lamb.

    TO ASSEMBLE
Place seared piece of lamb on the plate and place the pastry next to it. Place a spoonful of the braising liquid next to the lamb. Dust the pastry with powdered sugar and mushroom powder.

Mistress of the Ritz A Novel Audible Audio Edition Melanie Benjamin Barbara Rosenblat Random House Audio Books Reviews

  • I took French as my second language. I never got to use it in France, but I still have a soft spot for all things French. That liking for Paris, the setting for this book, was the initial reason I chose to read this book. However once I started reading I was instantly caught up in the characters and story. This story, based on a true one, is interesting enough as it is about German occupied France in WWII from the perspective the goings on at a hotel, but I think only this author could flesh it out in such a grand way. I have read hundtreds of books over the years. This author has the best character introduction I have ever read, and yes I’ve read “the classics.” This is a few pages into the book

For she is Blanche Ross Auzello. American. Parisian. Among other things, many other things, past, present, future that she will have to conceal from now on. But then again, hadn’t she been concealing most of them these past twenty years any way? So she is very good at this, deception. As, she must acknowledge, is her husband.

Color me intrigued. Is she a spy? What did she lie about in her past? Did she start poor and then reach the pinnacle of French sophistication? So many questions for which I wanted answers. To compare Blanche from this book to two characters many people might of read in high school - the character and feel of this book reminds me of Hester Prynne from the Scarlet Letter (the mystery and strength) and Blanche DuBois from A Streetcar names desire - New Orleans is as distinctive a place as New Orleans. Those books happen to be my favorite classics, especially as I lived in New Orleans as I read Streetcar.

So those comparisons are a lot to live up to and I hope don’t set your expectations too high, but I really think this book is a great find.
  • Inspired by true events, Melanie Benjamin has given readers another historical fiction novel that focuses on women. Just as she did in "The Aviator's Wife" and "The Girls in the Picture", she highlights the life of a less well-known woman, who is intimately involved with more famous individuals and with historical events. Focusing on the life and marriage of Blanche and Claude Auzello and spanning years from 1923 – 1945, the novel details the courage and resourcefulness of those who opposed the Nazi occupation of Paris.

Shifting between chapters focusing on Blanche and those on her husband, “The Mistress of the Ritz” is a personal, intimate look at two individuals’ relationship, its development, eventual deterioration and then its reinvigoration. Blanche’s insecurities were a large part of the attraction to Claude, the manager of the Ritz Hotel in Paris. Nevertheless, she managed to rise above them when a sense of duty and defiance thrust her into the role of a Resistance supporter. In the end, both acknowledge their dependence on one another and the part each played in the other's triumphs and tragedies.

Throughout "The Mistress of the Ritz," Melanie Benjamin alternates scenes between Blanche and her husband Claude. This allows the reader to understand the psychological bonds that held them together and that the Nazi occupation of Claude’s beloved Ritz placed on the marriage. It also highlights the ways in which she came into her own once she made the decision to commit to a cause and live her own life.

Melanie Benjamin is extraordinary as she develops the characters and depicts the times in which the story occurs. Each of the Auzellos’ strengths are depicted, yet neither is made to seem infallible. Dialog is realistic and, at times, heartbreaking. The portion of the novel dealing with Blanche’s imprisonment by the Nazis and the disclosure of her secret will bring tears to your eyes. The final chapter, narrated by Blanche’s friend Lily, takes place in 1969 and brings this tale to its tragic conclusion.

"The Mistress of the Ritz" is not a difficult read; it is engaging and the characters, interesting. The narrative will keep you reading straight through to the book’s final chapter. Language and scenes are appropriate for most readers, regardless of age. If you have not done so previously, Melanie Benjamin is an author whose books you will want to read.
  • The main characters are Claude and his American bride and wife Blanchette. Blanchette comes to Paris at the behest of a wealthy Egyptian man who promises her a career as an actress and then wishes to take her back to Egypt with him as his mistress. Claude is the manager of a fine hotel in Paris and comes to her rescue because he is immediately taken by her beauty. He marries her quickly and the two go on to the Ritz where Claude is the ever-meticulous manager. Claude informs his American bride that in the French "tradition" he will take a lover whom he will have sex with periodically. Blanchette leaves Claude frequently after one of their knockdown fights about his penchant for extramarital sex. Blanchette is upset and becomes an extroverted flirtatious fixture at the Ritz's Bar enchanting many well-known authors, ex-pats and celebrities. All of these glamorous activities come to a screeching halt when Paris is taken over by the Nazi's who move into the Ritz and other desirable homes. Blanche has a secret that she carries with her. Claude and Blanche interact with the Nazi officers who are also enchanted by Blanche's beauty and charm. The story unfolds by going back and forth in time. Blanch befriends Lily on one of her escapes from Claude. The story is mesmerizing, filled with insights into the Nazi occupation of France and the dysfunction of Claude and Blanche's marriage. I couldn't put this book down.
  • For lovers of historical fiction, “Mistress of the Ritz” is an easy read that catches the mood of wartime Paris with interesting characters and a reasonable adherence to historical fact. It is a tale of romance and intrigue, and offers a chill reminder of what life under occupation might be like for ordinary people. The characters are nicely developed and the story flows. For beach reading, this is a great book!
